Unfortunately, MS hasn't seen fit to update it in any significant way since 2001. After all this time, there's still no support for so many basic things - things that were in place way back in 2001. PNG support and fixed positioning support are two big ones for me. After all this time, they should be in there.

So, I can use IE, a browser that lacked support for several key things years ago, and grows more obsolete by the day, or I can use a smaller, faster browser that does a good job of supporting pretty much everything IE does and a whole lot more.

Add in tabbed browsing, which I couldn't live without, and the choice is obvious.

Although I should mention Safari is actually my primary browser, given a choice. Firefox is more efficient. IE is an old (in Web terms) program.

Your post actually contains the reasons why Firefox differs from IE. It is because it follows the W3C specs more closely than IE. 9 times out of 10 a page looks 'odd' in Firefox because the code was designed solely for IE, and actually contains errors IE has covered up.

IE has two modes - Strict and Quirks mode. In Quirks mode, boxes (divs) are created wrongly. It goes against the W3C specs. So Microsoft added Strict mode that shows boxes correctly. But bugs in IE can throw it back into Quirks mode. (Just add a line on the first line of your HTML file above the Doctype to do this!)

People are now realising that Firefox (and Opera) display pages "right". They follow the W3C specs to the letter. Now those people are designing for Firefox first, and patching their code for IE. It is a lot easier to work this way.

I'm not saying Firefox gets things perfect. But the list of small-but-annoying IE layout bugs is very long, and growing all the time. It would be OK if they were fixing these bugs, but they are not. Yet Firefox bugs are constantly being worked on, and will one day be solved. I haven't noticed any slowness between the two, but I love Firefox. I do a lot of developing and feel I can rely on firebug and their debugging tools. I love the add-ons available as well.
