The bookstore I work for has a wealth of photographs from author events over the years. I've just finished a complete rebuild of the website and would like to include some of these images in the background of the header.

Currently I am using an animated gif which limits me to 256 colors. I was just wondering if there is a way to do this that lets me use brighter clearer images.

I've looked into using apng's but I worry that they won't show up in IE 6 and my concern about using Flash is that I want the images in the background css so as not to disturb the Drupal theme on which I've built the site.
