We've heard that SVG is coming on strong as a major standard for web graphics. This news was reported yesterday at our school by someone giving a presentation to the school administrators. To me, it was a bunch of hoopalah and horn-blowing.

Has anyone heard anything about this? Is SVG coming on strong and we've missed something? Any news whatsoever?

Dave, Scaleable Vector Graphics is Adobe's answer to Flash, except it is open source and not tied to the company, so anyone can use it.

It is vector graphics information that can be embedded in a Web page as text so you can control it with JavaScript. Great so far...

The trouble is, that the World and his dog has the Flash plug-in - do you know anybody that has the SVG plug-in? I have all the browsers but I can't find a SVG plugin.

Adobe's SVG authoring package "LiveMotion" has just been axed.

What does that tell you?

Great idea but nobody wants to know.

Joe, thanks. Yes, everything you've just said above was offered at yesterday's SVG presentation. However, whomever this self-professed graphics GURU was (somebody out of California), he countered with a barage of what he called "inside information." His inside information was full of names and companies all focused on the SVG format. I cannot remember details to share here with all. The point is...he spoke well, is on the "inside" and used the analogy of the "Postscript" vs. Bitmap fonts battle back in the early 80's as an example.

Anyway, I thought it important enough to at least share this subject with the forum. I am also sharing this with my other forums to see if anyone knows more. Maybe Al Sparber and crew know something.

It may just be another fancy "proclomation" from an out-of-work Silicon Valley person who once was on the inside and now on the outside trying to make a buck with speaking engagements.

Anyway, that's the story and all I know at this point.

P.s.

Adobe is distributing quietly.... See
http://www.xmlhack.com/read.php?item=1177

I was also quite surprised to find WebDraw (JASC Software) also pop up on the SVG radar screen.
http://www.jasc.com/products/webdraw/

Thanks for the update Dave. I'd LOVE to see SVG (and PNG) better supported in browsers but what we have here is a juggernaut that's pretty hard to shift off its straight and narrow path. Unfortunately, the better solutions don't always win. How do you get millions of people to switch from Flash to SVG? How do you get them to switch from Explorer to...anything? If you have the answer, would you consider a partnership

Good news. Opera 8 has built-in SVG support! Apparently it has been part of the Presto rendering engine (used by Opera) for some time, but never revealed until now. So that's one browser we can count on. I'm sure Firefox won't be far behind.

I downloaded the Adobe SVG plug-in a long time ago and was pleased to find it works with Opera 7 as well (without having to add it manually). I've recently seen some SVG demos (the W3C specs have some too) that included Flash-like animation. I couldn't tell them from Flash.

SVG is far from dead. Its purpose is to bring life to data viewed on small-screen devices like mobiles. Apparently it's ideal for showing maps and so on.

I like the way you can easily edit the XML behind it too.

Good news everyone, Firefox v1.1 will be supporting SVG natively (link).

Everyone reporting on SVG seems to be comparing it to flash, but for me animation is a nice bonus while its killer feature is that you can make scalable vector graphics with it! Finally, graphics that always look perfect regardless of their size. The graphics can resize with the window, so that they always remain proportional, without becoming pixelated and blurry.

If I look forward to replacing anything with SVG then it's gifs, not flash.

Ars Technica commented on the benefits of SVG when they reviewed the Gnome 2.4 desktop some time ago, which replaced raster graphics with vector graphics for the entire desktop (link). Actually, one of the first things I notice whenever I reboot into Windows is how blocky and pixelated all of the resized icons (usually the quicklaunch icons) look.

Happy as I am to see more support for SVG, until IE supports it properly, it is not worth using. You can't design Web pages for Firefox users and let everybody else (the vast majority) flounder. Plug-ins are not the answer either, it has to be native support in IE!
