It is vector graphics information that can be embedded in a Web page as text so you can control it with JavaScript. Great so far...

The trouble is, that the World and his dog has the Flash plug-in - do you know anybody that has the SVG plug-in? I have all the browsers but I can't find a SVG plugin.

Adobe's SVG authoring package "LiveMotion" has just been axed.

What does that tell you?

Anyway, I thought it important enough to at least share this subject with the forum. I am also sharing this with my other forums to see if anyone knows more. Maybe Al Sparber and crew know something.

It may just be another fancy "proclomation" from an out-of-work Silicon Valley person who once was on the inside and now on the outside trying to make a buck with speaking engagements.

Anyway, that's the story and all I know at this point.

I downloaded the Adobe SVG plug-in a long time ago and was pleased to find it works with Opera 7 as well (without having to add it manually). I've recently seen some SVG demos (the W3C specs have some too) that included Flash-like animation. I couldn't tell them from Flash.

SVG is far from dead. Its purpose is to bring life to data viewed on small-screen devices like mobiles. Apparently it's ideal for showing maps and so on.

Everyone reporting on SVG seems to be comparing it to flash, but for me animation is a nice bonus while its killer feature is that you can make scalable vector graphics with it! Finally, graphics that always look perfect regardless of their size. The graphics can resize with the window, so that they always remain proportional, without becoming pixelated and blurry.

If I look forward to replacing anything with SVG then it's gifs, not flash.

Ars Technica commented on the benefits of SVG when they reviewed the Gnome 2.4 desktop some time ago, which replaced raster graphics with vector graphics for the entire desktop (link).
