Layout: Firefox bug?

Why oh why does Firefox (and Opera), when vertical scroll bars are required, reduce the page width by the width of the scroll-bar?
The effect is an anoying shift to the left on a page centred layout, when changing from a page which fits within the displayable area to one with rather more content.
I big minus for Firefox and Opera in my book
and a big plus for IE 6!
Perhaps I'm too much of a purist!

The workaround for that is to simply make your pages longer (with extra

s at the bottom or a containing div of substantial height) so that the pages with little content still stretch beyond the bottom of the browser window on a large screen.

Many thanks Joe
- why do I always look for complicated solutions at the expense of the obvious?
