Hello,

I am presented with this perplexing problem at the moment -- an opened Search/Favorites bar in IE is cutting off the left side of my page on small monitors.

Here's the site: http://clients.vltavastudios.com/orthok/

You'll need to open a sidebar in IE in a small window and you'll see what I mean.

If you make the sidebar wide enough, part of the page will be cut off even though the horizontal scrollbars are at the very left.

Mind you, it's all VALID XHTML & CSS

Thank you

P.S. Oh, by the way...this is my client's request...if it were me I couldn't care less about IE search bars...it's a good reason for switching to FF...

it's all VALID XHTML & CSS

Being valid is not enough. You could write a bad essay but get all your spellings right.

The problem in this case is that you have a fixed width table at 800 pixels. The safe size for an 800 x 600 monitor, taking scrollbars and browser furniture into account is more like 780 pixels. Try reducing your table by 20-30 pixels but the only way to be really sure is to use a percentage width instead of a fixed one.

Joe, I've resized the entire site width to 740px, which fits perfectly with no scrollbars in a 800x600 window, but if the sidebar is wide enough it still cuts off the left side of the page. I believe this is due to the centering 'trick' in CSS...somehow with the sidebar open the page tries to center itself in the limited space...and results in the cutting off.

Yes, if you use CSS centering, the left edge can adopt a negative value. I've used this feature deliberately on occasions. On the other hand, if you don't center the page and leave it aligned left, then the right edge will be cut off and you will have to scroll sideways. Sounds like you need to use percentages to get out of that trap.
