Recently came across FIR, and the other related subjects, although I'm sure it's old news to many of you out there. On the offchance that you dont' know what I'm talking about go here:

http://www.stopdesign.com/also/articles/replace_text/

My query is that there is quite an array of opinion out there, because, whilst it seems to be a great way of improving accessibility when using font images etc, it also seems that it causes almost as many problems as it solves.

If anyone has an opinion I'd be interested to hear it.

One of the problems that it causes (but easily fixed) is that dumb old IE (Windows) makes the div two or three pixels taller than expected. Adding overflow: hidden; fixes it.

I'm introducing a new method of doing rollovers in the next issue of WPDFD (this Thursday) which uses the background-image property of divs - and shifting it on rollover to display a new image. Can also be used to animate JPEGs and PNGs.

I'm currently using a diffrent technique, I don't know what it's called or if it has a name, but there's two variations, one for if you want to see the text in front of the image, and the other is if you don't want to see the text.

The HTML looks a bit like like this: [tt]<div id="image_replacement_1">A couple of words go here</div>[/tt]

My Web Design site shows the first sort (where the text is shown in front).
and the CSS for that is [tt]http://www.alpha-matrix-design.co.uk/css/tabs.css[/tt]
