Hullo.
Not sure if this is the right section of the forum, 'cos I don't know how this is done... how do you make a web page saved to the user's 'Favorites' have its own little icon? (Such as the one for this forum.)

I have an article about this here

I created the favicon using your instructions and it works for me, thanks! But, I noted that other developers, such as http://www.hicksdesign.co.uk/ does not use the <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico"> tag. In fact, I could not find any reference to favicon in the source code. How does it work or is referenced on their sites?

I don't see any favicon at http://www.hicksdesign.co.uk/ (Mozilla 1.7.3 OSX) ![]()

It's the green leaf that appears in the URL field, as well on the browser tab. Do you see it?
I find this true of other sites, including CNN, that has a favicon, but the link is nowhere to be found in their source. Where do they put it?

No, it doesn't show up on that site or in CNN for me. It does show up at http://www.wpdfd.com/index.html and other sites so whatever they are doing doesn't seem to work in Mozilla.

Favicons can be funny things... WPDFD's, for example, stopped showing up with the FF .9 release.
This method appears to be reliable:
<link rel="favicon" type="image/ico" href="path/to/favicon.ico" />

The WPDFD Favicon shows up fine in my FireFox 1.0 but I will agree that they are fustratingly unreliable. The
http://www.hicksdesign.co.uk/
favicon shows in Firefox 1.0 but not Mozilla 1.7.3 Mac or IE 6 (Win).

For me, it shows up fine in the address bar, but not in the bookmarks. The method I posted seems to work everywhere, for me, anyway.
Favicons are flaky. Always have been.
