I'm looking to learn web design. Whilst researching the subject, I gathered that I should learn HTML, XHTML and CSS. Which book would you recommend to a complete beginner?

Html 5 and CSS 3 has been a great advancement in the web design and web development world. You have a great idea to go for it. It would be of great help if you want to learn web designing. Here are some links to good material. You can check.

I have looked on Amazon, but I want to know from you: which is the best book on web design for a beginner like me?
Right now, I know HTML and CSS, and a tiny bit of JavaScript.

I got started using Peachpit Press's Visual QuickStart Guide series. There's a book for any web programming language you'd like to learn. They work almost like a course. You start with the simple stuff and then build on it as you work through the book. Just sit down at your computer with one of these books and follow the example code page by page. Each example is accompanied by a image of what you're trying to create and a description for clarity. Another bonus to this series is the informative appendices at the end of each volume. Hopw this helps.

I would recommend the series of books by Quick Start too, very good books indeed. These will give you the basics, and when you run into trouble, any question you have can usually be pre-answered on forums like these. Good luck and teach yourself some SEO while your at it.
