Just a quick question...
I'm just finished up my Graphic Arts degree and I am still considered a student. I was planning on purchasing my own windows copy of Dreamweaver. If I purchase the Academic version now, would I be able to purchase the upgrade to professional version later? Or would it be cheaper in the long run to purchase the professional version now?
Thanks so much!

Or would it be cheaper in the long run to purchase the professional version now?
Thanks so much!

you can't upgrade academic software. and, you can't do professional work with an academic copy. and they want your first born. ok, not really. but academic software is limiting (I'm a teacher, I know), which is one of the reasons I use mostly open source software.

as for the need for upgrades, I went from MX to MX2004 and there is precious little difference. I do most of my work in php/mysql anyways, and use an editor half the time. DW is great for forms, and other tedious html'ing. wait to upgrade, unless you're doing web design professionally, then a) you'll need a full verison, and b) clients like to see that you have professional tools.

Seriously, you go into a job and say, I use gimp, vim, and rsync, they'll look at you like you're a freak. Say, I use DW and they'll be happy. I was doing work for a small pharmacy, and I walk in, iBook in hand, and fire up DW. He doesn't know most of site was hand coded php in vim. I get paid the same. Think of it as buying a nice business suit.

I find that a very strange client relationship. Why would a client care what you use? It's the result that counts. Do you ask your doctor what brand of stethoscope she uses?

Why does wearing a business suit make any difference? I've never worn a business suit, only jeans. This business suit thing is a conservative myth. If people judge you on your suit, you might as well be a Propane and Propane accessories salesman. Yes, my doctor wears jeans too!

If you want to establish credibility, don't conform to stereotypes but show the client that you know more about Web design than they do.
