Hi,

Up until now I've been using my old Photoshop 5.5, but recently I've been playing with Photoshop CS.  I really like it, except that it seems save files at extremely overblown sizes.  This morning I did a little test -- I created the exact same file (simple black text over a white background) in both versions of Photoshop, and 5.5 saved the file at 20KB while CS saved it at 64KB.  Does anyone know why this happens, and have any tips on how to change it?  I haven't bouhgt CS yet -- I'm just testing it out -- but had planned on buying it in the near future.  Before I do, I want to find out if I'll be stuck with massive file sizes on everything...

You haven't said what file format you were saving to. I haven't seen any difference with GIF, PNG or JPEG files saved with CS and previous versions. Those are the only ones that matter.

Sorry -- I was saving as JPG.

Okay, if you examime the other factors that can affect a JPEG's apparent size (other than the program used)

There a lot of setting in there and some of them are different in CS.

For instance, the quality slider in Save as... (JPEG) now goes up to 120 instead of 100 - so the same numeric value will give different amounts of compression between 5.5 and CS. There there are the various optimisations that can be switched on and off.

Save as... and Save for Web give different results.

If you have a different OS or hard disk, the reported size can vary substantially because of the different block sizes.

With JPEGs, it's quite difficult to make comparisons but you would need to make as many aspects as common as possible.
