Just though I'd let you know that there is a much better way that doesn't involve JavaScript at all. They just use the CSS background position to move the image for each state.

I also use them on my personal site. But they don't use an active state.

Yes, I wrote an article about CSS-only rollovers way back in November 2002 http://www.wpdfd.com/editorial/wpd1102.htm but it is limited to simple rollovers. With the film strip idea, you can have much more sophisticated rollovers, short animation sequences, and buttons that 'latch' like radio buttons. I'll be showing some of the more interesting things you can do next time.
