Sphinx Search at Craigslist
A couple days ago, Andrew posted a news item titled Sphinx goes billions to the Sphinx web site. Last but not least, Powered By section, now at 113 sites and counting, was updated and restyled. I had long wondered how much Sphinx search queries are performed per month if we sum all the sites using it, and whether we already hit 1B page views per month or not. Being open-source, there's no easy way to tell. But now with the addition of craigslist to Powered By list I finally know...

FoxTab
Although I primarily use Safari, this sure beats a bunch of horizontal tabs. And I'm guessing we'll eventually see iTunes-style thumbnail browsing in Safari. #

Blick Blocky Retro
After a wild couple days, it's live. Well, live-ish. Blick Blocky Retro, the ninth iteration of this veritable site, has made its debut. Why? I've been working on this redesign for close to a year now. It has simmered, occasionally come to a boil, only for me to turn off the heat and step away from it. However, recent troubles with Dreamhost have finally made me flip my lid. The site performance has been sporadic with not-so-uncommon 500 errors and I just couldn't take it anymore. Like...

Seeking JavaScript Help
After the fantastic response to my last call for help, I'm back with another request for assistance, this time with JavaScript.
CSS Working Group feeds back to WaSP
Almost exactly a year ago, I asked all interested web professionals to let the CSS Working Group know what they want from CSS. Fantasai, an invited expert in the working group has published her feedback on our requests with information on what the Working Group has done about them. It’s unclear to me what will happen [...]
Longevity, morphology, incept dates
Jaiku is being shut down . So is Dodgeball (also known as Where’s Tantek? ). They’re going the way of I Want Sandy , Yahoo Live , Pownce and Ficlets . But Ficlets is different. Although the name and the URL belong to AOL, all the stories belong to their respective authors—authors like Wil Wheaton . Even better, they’re licensed under Creative Commons attribution, share alike . So Kevin has managed to archive all the stories at a new home....
From Idea to Reality
We all have ideas and side projects. I’ve said a few times in the past that the real trick to success (or some semblance thereof) is the ability to execute and to finish what you start. This week marked a significant milestone for Blue Flavor as we launched (albeit into, ahem, beta) a side project that we’ve got high hopes for: 97bottles.com. ( 97bottles.com is a social network-ish site we created to catalog, review, share and learn about the art of tasting beer....

97 Bottles
Almost two years ago, I was having a drink with Keith in The Alembic Bar on my last night in San Francisco : Keith buys me a beer from the local microbrewery. I opt for an amber ale while he plumps for an IPA. After the first sips, we compare tasting notes and once again speculate about a beer-oriented version of Cork?d. Well, like Tom says, everyone?s got ideas . It?s following through that counts. So that?s exactly what Blue Flavor have done. They built...
Pardon Me
Here's the thing... I was having some issues with a previous host and I needed to get off, quick. In doing so, I'm pushing this design — Blick Blocky Retro — live. I don't have comments enabled, yet. I'm probably missing a bunch of content that fell outside the land of blog. In any case, I'm on a new server now. And I'll get the comments live along with a more formal introduction post. Soon.

Reformat and repartition hard drives before using them with Time Machine
A month or so ago I bought an external hard drive to use as a backup disk with Apple?s Time Machine. Previously I used DVD-R:s for backing up my personal data, but I wanted an automated backup system in place. Since Mac OS X comes with Time Machine built in, I decided to give it a try. Getting started was easy. I bought an external USB drive, hooked it up, reformatted it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) instead of the Windows file system the drive shipped with, and started Time Machine....

What Makes Good Copy Good.
I recently had my first experience writing copy from scratch, for Blue Flavor’s new web app, 97bottles . In the process of writing, revising, and making decisions about subtle word changes and such, I found myself always asking the question, what makes good copy good? Here are some random thoughts about that. Funner Good copy should be fun. As in, fun to navigate around with a few little surprises (uncommon adjectives instead of cliches, for example) here and there....

Talking to a Wiimote in Ubuntu 8.10
To add Wiimote support on Ubuntu 8.10, start by running the command “sudo apt-get install wminput wmgui lswm” to install the CWiid library and associated software. If you’re using a desktop machine, you probably don’t have Bluetooth capability. If you run the program “lswm” and see the message “No Bluetooth interface found” then you need to [...]
